PERSONAL.

The Rev. Mr Watson left for Wellington by the Maori last night. Dr. Shand, of Wellington, arrived from the north by the Wahine to-day.

Captain Rainey, Marine Superintendent for the Tyser Line, left for Wellington last night. Prince and Princess Henry of Prussia are to sail shortly on a visit to the South American Republics. The, Hon. A. L. Herdman, AttorneyGeneral, arrived from the north this morning.

Professor Shand was a passenger from Wellington by the Wahine this morning."

Mr Herbert Kirk M 'Dougall was yesterday . admitted as a solicitor of the Supreme Court of New Zealand by his Honour Mr Justice Denniston on the application of Mr O. T. J. Alpers. Dr. Cockayne and Mr E. R. Waite will be entertained by the Councilof the Canterbury Philosophical Institute at a farewell dinner at Warner's Hotel this evening.

Mr James Young,''curator of the Public Gardens, is to be entertained" at a farewell social in the Cadena Rooms prior to his departure for England. The function will take pb?ce on March 17. Dr and Mrs. Fife Slater, formerly of New Brighton and lately of Kaikoura, leave Auckland on Saturday, en route for England. Dr Slater will spend some time in his native city of Aberdeen before returning to New Zealand. Sir Joseph Ward arrived from the north this morning. Sir John Findlay was also a passenger by the Wahine. Bpth will attend the investiture ceremony to be held at Government House this evening. 'Sir Joseph Ward returns to Wellington to-morrow night. Inspector _, James Hendry, , of the Southland Education Board, has resigned after a period of service extending over 28 years, was made the subject of a complimentary resolution at the last meeting of the board. The motion expressed regret at s his retirement, and accepted-the resignation to take effect from December 31, 1914, and relieved Mr Hendry from duty on June -30, 1914.

Mr L. E. Vernazoni, the honorary secretary of the Christchurch Philatelic Society, sent in his resignation at last night's meeting of that body. Mr Vei*nazoni, who is leaving shortly for Sydney, was presented with a dressing-case;

Mr W. G. C. Brumelburg, who made the presentation, spoke in high pterins of the departing secretary's wor\ for the society.

Mr P. V. Hooper, for twelve years with Messrs Charles Bean and Co., of Christchurch, will shortly take up a position with the Christchurch Meat Company. On Saturday night he was made the recipient of two presentations, a suit-case -from his late employers, and a smoker's companion from the staff. 'Messrs W ; C. Bean and G. N. Hay ley made the presentations for the firm and staff respectively.

The Hon. Heaton Rhodes and the Hon. F. H. D. Bell arrived in Christchurch this morning from Wellington. Both will be present at the investiture to-night. On Thursday Mr Heaton Ehodes will attend the Cheviot Show, and on Friday the Kaikoura Show. He will return to Wellington via Christchurch. Mr Bell will go to Akaroa on Friday to attend the United Fire Brigades' Conference, and will probably leave for Wellington the same evening.
