RIFLE CHAMPIONSHIP.
TRENTHAM MEETING OPENS. AN IMPROVED ENTRY. Press Association. WELLINGTON, February 26. The Dominion Rifle Association's annual meeting"commenced at Trentham to-day. Daylight was ushered in with a south-east wind and rain. A post-, ponement of the' opening of the proceedings appeared inevitable; but, as the day wore on, atmospheric conditions improved slightly. The marksmen assembled shortly after 9 o'clock, when Colonel Collins addressed them. He said the entries showed a slight increase. It appeared that the meeting was on the way to recover its former popularity. Colonel Collins also §tated that he hoped that if the Empire Match was conducted in Melbourne, as had been suggested, New Zealand would be represented. The team would comprise the first eight in the final 50 for the champion belt, and four others to be selected by the committee. The squads then marched to the range, where the Classification Practice Match was commenced at 9.50. The entries for the meeting comprise:—Staff, 5; territorials, 61; riflemen, 288 (including 91 tyros).
