As the result of a charge laid by the Society for thfe-Protection of Children, a widow, who is a charwoman, was sentenced to six,months' imprisonment. She occupied a stinking, dark, and fireless room in Clerkenwell, with three poorly-clothed and starving children, bordering on idiocy, whom she fed on broken victuals which she took home. The magistrate described the case as one |>f mediaeval barbarity.
