Civic Snapshots Notes from the Council Chamber

Further information, the City Council decided last evening, is to be obtained in connection with the proposal to construct a municipal golf links at Lake Waiatarua. Mr. C. R. Redhead, golf architect, of Rotorua, had previously reported to the Parks Committee that, considering the large expense and the time it would take to put tho area in order, the council would be well advised to obtain land elsewhere. The council wants to know what additional land at Lake Waiatarua would be necessary. The chief librarian and director, Mr. j John Barr, reported that the extension ! of the Epsom Library had been a ! great success. All the library departments had been enlarged, and the lending department was only slightly smaller than that at Rcmuora. Luring a speecli by Cr. W. TI. Murray on the workers’ dwellings at Grey Lynn, Cr. W. L. Casey was speaking in an undertone to a fellow councillor. ‘ You should not speak when another gentleman is addressing the council.” Cr. Murray rebuked him. ‘‘.Don’t call yourself names,” retorted Cr. Casey. The Mayor called for order hurriedly. A grant of £lO 10s was made to the Modernising of Buildings Promotion Society for the Relief of Unemployment. A motion by Cr. G. W. Hutchison to make the grant £25 was lost. Tho importance of the visit to Auckland on October 24 of the Hutch cruiser Java and two destroyers, under Rear-Admiral Kayser, was indicated in a report by the Mayor. The complement was 53 officers and 678 noncommissioned officers and ratings. A civic reception at noon on October 24 and an At Home in the Town Hall in the evening were in view, and entertainments were under consideration. <« >!' Tn the interests of unemployed skilled tradesmen who, for various reasons, could not take up tho labour offered as relief work, the Auckland Painters, Decorators and Leadlight Workers’ Union siiggested that the council should undertake the painting of various of its properties needing such treatment. Tho union considered such action might encourage other property owners to follow suit. The Parks Committee is to report on the request. The plans, specifications and estimates for the new bridge over the Whau Creek, .as submitted by Messrs. Gray and Gulliver, civil engineers, were approved on the recommendation of the City Engineer, Mr. J. Tyler. The bridge will be of reinforced concrete, with a' central span of 30 feet and a clearance of 12 feet above high water. The roadway will be 30 feet wide, flanked with pavements eight feet wide. The estimated cost is £9,500.

The council approved the Harbour Board’s plan for the proposed subdivision and roading of the Western Reclamation, on the understanding that, in the event of the unclaimed area on “the east of the new road being filled in, the road would be widened 24 feet. A second stipulation was that two of the adjoining sections should be transferred to the council if wanted for reserve purposes or parking and traffic facilities.
