SUICIDE WHILE DEPRESSED
FARMER TAKES BLUESTONE From Our Own Correspondent WHANGAREI, Today. An inquest was held by Mr. H. C. Hemphill, J.P., this afternoon In the Whangarei Hospital, concerning the death of Henri Germaine, who was admitted to the hospital yesterday morning suffering from bluestone poisoning, and who died an hour later. Hr. Hall, medical superintendent of the Whangarei Hospital, said Mr. Germaino was admitted at 9.30 a.m. with a history of having taken copper sulphate at 7 a.m. He was given immediate treatment, but died at 10.45 a.m. Just before dying ho told witness he dissolved bluestone in hot water and took three drinks. Heath was due to heart failure following absorption of copper sulphate. Josephene Germaine, a daughter of deceased, said her lather left a note in which he said that as life was unbearable ho found it more courageous to end it.
Lucy Germaine, wife of deceased, said her husband was in bed when she left for the milking-shed, and on returning found him with him mouth covered with bluestone, and staggering. He said he had taken three drinks of bluestone and jumped into the creek three times.
A verdict was returned that death was due to heart failure following bluestone poisoning, self administered, while in a state of depression.
