"REDEMPTION” John Gilbert, last seen and heard in the sophisticated Molnar comedy, "His Glorious Night,” turns to a tragic role in his latest all-talking screen offering, “Redemption,” which is now being shown at the National Theatre. “Redemption” was based on Lyof Tolstoi’s well known play. Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer has stuck faithfully to the original story and has given the scenes of pre-war Russia a remarkable authenticity and pictorial .effectiveness which go far toward making the picture seem a thing of flesh and blood rather than a series of celluloid move- ! ments. , ! What, however, goes even farther toward achieving this end is the acting of Gilbert and a supporting cast of such prominent screen names as Renee I Adoree, Eleanor Boarilman and Conrad j Nagel, all of whose finished performances are a pleasure to watch. There is a full supporting programme of talkies. From tomorrow the National Theatre will present “They Learned About Women,” a talo of vaudeville performers and baseball players, in which tile leading roles are played by the two well-known singing comedians. Van and Sclienck. There are no less than ten new song hits in this production. Included in the su porting cast are Mary Doran, Eddie Gribbon, J. C. Nugent, Benny Rubin, Tommy Dugan and Francis Bushman, jun.
