MAORI VOTING
ASSOCIATION THINKS THERE SHOULD BE ROLL ! M.P.’S BELIEF DOUBTED i In a discussion last evening on the system of voting in Maori elections, members of the Akarana Maori AssocI iation held the view that there should \ be a roll* of those eligible to vote. Mr. E. K. Asher indicated the anomaly of making it compulsory for 1 European voters to he entered on election rolls, while there was r.o record i of Maori voters. The roll would assist in preventing duplicate voting, an abuse alleged by : Mr. T. IT. Makitanara. M.P. for Soutli- | era Maori, to exist. In addition, it 1 would be a valuable record for other purposes, notably in determining the ages of native pensioners in future years. Generally, the meeting though Mr. Makitanara’s contention that there had been duplication of voting was much to be doubted. It was thought that the present system of Maori voting papers could lead to irregularities, as many natives were not conversant with the procedure of voting.
