CHILE CELEBRATES BREAK FROM SPAIN'S RULE 120 YEARS AGO Chile today celebrates the IBoth anniversary of her revolt against Spanish rule. It is the national day of Chile. The idea of independence was suggested to the South 'Americans by the revolt of England's North American colonies and he sii -cess of the French Revolution. On September IS, ISIO, the Chileans forced their (Governor to resign. Finally, in ISIS, the Chilean patrio; with the Irisn surname, Bernado O’Higgins, formally proclaimed his country’s complete independence. After 15 years of confused disputes, guerrilla warfare and rivalries among the cities and among the party chiefs, an oligarchical constitution was set up. This, with a few modifications, still prevails. It has secured to Chile a comparatively tranquil and orderly political development. This morning members of the Consular Corps called on Mr. E. A. Craig, Consul for Chili.
