A SUCCESSFUL YEAR HIGH BUTTER-FAT AVERAGES Special to THE SUN HAMILTON, -M«nday. A satisfactory farming season was experienced at the Waikeria Borstal Institute during 1929-30. Three herds, consisting of 307 Shortborn and Jersey cows, were milked by band, and aVeraged ’302.91b of butterfat u cow for tho season. No. 1 herd, comprising 112 Shorthorns, yielded an average of 323.41 b butter-fat. The 94 Jerseys in No. 2 herd gave an average return of 3241 b butter-fat, while No. 3 herd, consisting of 101 Shorthorn cows and heifers, average 260.8115 of butter-fat. The sale of milk realised £6,000 last season. The herds are being increased this year, and will contain nearly 400 cows. In addition to the dairy stock, a large number of breeding ewes are kept on the property. Last season 604 fat lambs were sold, and* £2OO was received from the sale of wool. Pigs proved very profitable. About 200 are kept, and £734 was realised front this source last season. The wet summer experienced last season affected the return from the farm to some extent, the fruit and vegetables being particularly retarded. Crops included 200 acres of swedes, 16 acres of mangolds, 10 acres of soft turnips, eight acres of carrots, eight j acres of maize, and three acres of I artichokes. A large additional area is being put down in permanent pasture ! this year. Of the 4,700 acres comprising the property, a very large proportion has been improved, and where useless swamps existed a few years ago there are now some of the best paddocks on the property. Cold stored are now cleared and practically all sold at last week’s prices. Wool. —The Bradford market is quiet and there is very little business in tops.
