STRONG PROTEST

REGIONAL PLANNING AND MANUKAU COUNTY CHAIRMAN’S CRITICISM “At the present juncture we should strongly protest against the scheme. Until it is more clearly defined and we are in a better position, it is useless.” At tliis morning’s meeting, the Manukau County Council received a request from the Minister of Internal Affairs for an opinion in connection with the proposed regional planning boundaries. Mr. F. M. Waters, chairman, obliged—most emphatically. “At the Counties’ Association conference,” Mr. Waters continued, “our remit suggesting that the whole question bo deferred until it was fully gone into was adopted almost unanimously. We2 are asked to commit ourselves to a scheme without our knowing where it will finish up. “As regards compensation, we have no idea where the money is supposed to come from. “In this area there are more than 30 local bodies. The committee would consist of about 33, and we, who con- j trol a district ten times larger than ] that of the other bodies would not have I anything like a fair representation.” He moved that a reply be sent to the Minister reminding him of his promise to do nothing, and that a copy of the Counties’ Association protest against the scheme be sent to Mr. A. W. Hall, M.P. for the district, and to Mr. J. N. Massey, M.P. for Franklin, and also that the attention of the Counties’ Association be again drawn to the question. The motion was carried.
