FARMERS AND BUDGET

WELLINGTON MEETING DISAPPROVES PRICES AND COSTS iVcss Association WELLINGTON, Today. A representative meeting of the New Zealand Farmers’ Union, Sheepowners’ Federation and Counties Association today discussed taxation proposals. Mr. W. J. Poison, M.P., presided. He said they were profoundly dissatisfied with the taxation proposals and the position of/the country and desperately needed measures of economy. "We had better got hack to prewar methods, instead of carrying ou with post-war methods,” he said. The Budget might have been nearly balanced in a practical way with the exercise of more economies and with practically no increase in taxation at all, he continued. If an increase was necessary it should be on luxuries. Mr. J. S. Jessep, Gisborne, thought they should at least congratulate the Prime Minister on his boldness. it would have been easy to suggest a loan. f Among many speakers, Mr. J. H. Joll, Hawke’s Bay, said there was one thing to do and that was to cut down the expense of running the country. Mr. Poison said farm prices were just about down to a prp-war level, but costs were 70 per cent, above. It was resolved: “That this meeting approves of the suggested economies in railways and defence.”
