AFTER FORTY YEARS
CONSTABLE’S RETIREMENT Joining the New Zealand Police Force in 1890, Constable C. H. Warneford, who has been in charge of the Northcote Station for the past four years, will retire today ond superannuation with three months’ leave of absence. He will continue to live in Auckland. When Mr. Warneford entered the force 40 years ago, the wage was 7s a day, out of which the policeman had to pay for his own uniform and life insurance, and no pension scheme existed. He first joined the Permanent Artillery in Wellington. Eighteen months later he was transferred to Fort Takapuna, at Auckland. He was appointed to the police force in Wellington, and after serving on various stations he was placed in charge of the station at Okarito, West Coast, South Island. Subsequently he was in charge at Martinborough and Mokau. and was for 12 years at Frankton Junction prior to going to Northcote in June. 1926.
