SCENE IN COMMONS
MEMBER GRASPS MACE AND RUSHES EXIT SUSPENDED BY HOUSE United P.A.—By Telegraph Copyright Reed. 12.25 p.m. LONDON, Thurs. One of the'liveliest scenes enacted in the House of Commons for a long time was witnessed today. Mr. A. F. Brockway (Labour) at question time insisted, on making a speech sympathetic to India, and the Prime Minister, Mr. Ramsay MacDonald, moved his suspension. While a division was being taken Mr. Brockway left the House. Mi-. J. Beckett (Labour), who was one of the tellers, seized the Mace from the table and ran toward an exit, shouting: “Mr. Speaker, it is a damned disgrace!” An attendant recovered the Mace and Mr. Beckett stood at the bar of the House while Mr. MacDonald moved his suspension, which was agreed to. The expulsions will operate until July 25. The Speaker declared the suspension of Mr. Brockway carried and Mr. Beckett’s carried by 324 votes to 4. The division was taken in an atmosphere of great excitement. There was much booing and shouts of “Third degree.”
