The Old Rivals Again

THE MATCH OF THE ROUND

Ponsonby-City League Clash

RIVALS over a period of 21 years, the Ponsonby and City teams trill clash tomorrow in the chief attraction at Rugby League headquarters. It should be a great match, for City is at present at the head of the competition table, followed closely by Ponsonby, one point away.

Both teams are expected to bo pretty well at full strength for the game, although there is still some doubt about Put Skelton and Thompson being able to don the jersey for Ponsonby. Both have been on the injured list. City played a line game against Newton last week, but Fonsonby’s form has not been so convincing of late. It has sailed too close to the wind to make its supporters overenthusiastic about the result of tomorrow’s game. Thus the odds will likely be slightly in City’s favour when the teams take the field. Devonport will meet Richmond on the No. 2 ground at Carlaw Park at three o’clock and this match should also be an attractive one. Two games will be played at the Domain. Marist meeting Kllerslie and KrngslandAthletic playing Newton. Following are the League teams for tomorrow’s matches: Senior A Grade Ponsonby United. —I. Wilson. F. Delgrosso, C. . The Glen Lynn third grader* a battle royal, were beaten S—s Saturday last. It was a grand the teams being very evenlv matches Sainsbury was the mainstay of Glen Lynn, being unlucky not to haw scored on several occasions. Ted Power, ** half, played an outstanding game. fullback. Wickam. was equally as good while in the forwards Dyer and were Al. The forwards would do better if they were to follow the bar instead of waiting for it to come back to them. Mormon, the winger, want* to f»ass the ball infield when !:e L> blocked. # • 9 The Glen Lynn 7th grade team is improving and the boys are playing greu: football. Last Saturday, gains,: Avondale, they had it all their own wav. They got the ball nearly ever time from the scrum, and the combination of the backs was pretty t<* watch. The forwards are sound. Bath, the five-eighth. is a good boy' but the second five-eighths wants to try and run straight upheld instead of across. Bartrum. on the wing, h going to go a long way Jn the game. Second grade. Richmond v. Mount Wellington.—Although Mount Wellington put up a stubborn defence for a whilo in the first half, the- Maroon.* overran it in the finish, there a procession of tries. Richmond attacked at the outsc*t» and during a ruck on the Blues’ line. C. Dunn whipped up and scored easily. Th<next try was a nice bit of work, from a scrum, the ball travelled along the back line, each man handling a greasy ball, and Estall finished off the movement with a determined dash down the line, evading would-be tacklers with a nice swerve. Mount Wellington decreased Richmond’s lead a little later- when tht halfback. Baker, forced his way tliorugh the Maroon pack to score a good try. Richmond was In scoring mood, for the second half had hardly opened when Pell scored. Stallworthy gathered in the leather and side-stepped his way through, sending Cowan over near the posts. At this stage of the game Richmond’s forwards overwhelmed the opposition and opened up the game at every opportunity. Pell crossed again. Estall scored two more tries and in both showed judgment, speed and determination. For Richmond, Cavanagh and Blood were in the thick of everything and were easily the best forwards oa the field. Of the l*acks S. Dunn, plaving at half, a position new to him. played very* well, sending his back* away in great style. Estall wa* probably Richmond's star Ixick. his three tries being splendid efforts. C. Dunn ably lead his side and got Richmond out of many a difficulty. Ta* final score was: Richmond 25, Mount Wellington 3.
