BISHOP LONG OF NEWCASTLE DIES IN LONDON AFTER LAMBETH . CONFERENCE Reed. 9.35 a.m. LONDON, Wed. The death is announced of the Rt. Rev. George M Long, Bishop of Newcastle (N.S.W.). He became ill last evening after the Lambeth Conference and died in hospital from cerebral haemorrhage. A message from Sydney says Dr. Long, who was 56 years of age, was one of the foremost men in Australian Church life. He was made Commander of the British Hmpire in 1919.
The Rt. Rev. Dr. Long, who had been‘Bishop of Newcastle sirfeo 1928, enjoyed a career wealthy in scholastic achievement, as, his degrees show (D.D., Lambeth, 1912; LL.D., Cambridge, 1918; LL.D.. Manchester, 1919; M.A. degree attained at Melbourne). Ho was ordained in 1899 after his education at Trinity College, Melbourne, and became minister of Foster. Ho was appointed canon of Melbourne in .1910, following nine years as headmaster of the grammar school at Kew, and during the war was chaplain to tlie A.I.F. in France. From 1911 to 1928 he filled the position of Bishop of .Bathurst.
