WAIKATO SYNOD

STANDING COMMITTEE BALLOTS GENERAL FUND QUOTAS From. Our Oxen Correspondent HAMILTON, Wednesday. The Waikato Diocesan Synod continued its session today, the VicarGeneral, Archdeacon Gordon Bell, presiding. The Rev. G. T. Beale (Stratford) moved that the present system of quotas for the diocesan general fund, the Maori mission and the board of missions be abolished, and that each parish be given detailed information of the needs for which the money is required, and that it be left to the ruridecanal "boards and Taranaki archdiaconal board to decide the question with the parishes. The registrar, Mr. A. B. Whyte, explained that the quotas were assessed on the basis of the income received by each parish over a period of three years. The motion was lost.

The following were elected representatives on the General Synod: Archdeacon Bell. Archdeacon Gavin, Canon Strong, Messrs. H. A. Swarbrick, T. G. Hirst, W. H. Skinner and J. G. Wynyard. . The election of the standing committee caused two ballots to be taken, and then was not completed. Bight clergy and 10 laymen were required. At the first ballot Archdeacon Hori Haiti, Archdeacon G. H. Gavin, Canon H. R. B. Gillespie, Canon B. H. Strong, Rev. G. T. Beale, Rev. C. W. Turner and Messrs. H. A. Swarbrick, T. C. Fookes, T. G. Hirst, H. G. Corbett and W. F. Kent Johnston were elected. At the second ballot the Rev. R. L. Connolly was elected. One clergyman and five laymen are still required. A further ballot will be taken tomorrow evening. Archdeacon G. H. Gavin (Waitara) moved that the good wishes of synod be extended to Archdeacon and Mrs. F. G. Evans, of New Plymouth, in their retirement, and that synod should express its deep gratitude for the noble example of the long and efficient ministry of Archdeacon Evans, especially his 18 years of selfsacrificing service as Archdeacon of Taranaki. The motion was carried with applause. Archdeacon Bell (Cambridge) moved that an assurance of synod's appreciation of the w.ork being done by Bishop Bennett among the Maori people be forwarded. The motion was carried with acclamation. A motion of appreciation of the services of the late Mr. Harold Edward Abraham, of Stratford, was passed. Canon Strong paid a tribute to Mr. Abraham's work and exp'-essei! sypmathy . with the relatives.
