N.Z. LEAGUE TEAM

WIN AT BATHURST FOUR-POINT MARGIN SYDNEY, Wednesday. The New Zealand League footballers today defeated a team representing the Western District of New South Wales at Bathurst by 20 points to 16. There was a very large attendance. The weather was fine and the ground in good order. The New Zealand forwards were prominent in the early play. Abbott broke away from a scrum and Brisbane scored. Shortly afterward Brisbane was tackled hard by Wright and left the field suffering from concussion. Dufty missed in an attempt to kick a penalty goal. Wright scored a try after a run from the quarter line. His attempt at goal failed. Watene then passed the ball to Meyer, who scored, and Gregory converted. Later Abbott passed to Griffith, who handed the ball to Meyer, who scored. This try was converted by Gregory. Sara then added a try for the Westerners. After brilliant work by Carroll, Sara and Wright, Green crossed the line. Sara failed to add the extra points. HOBBINS RETIRES HURT Dufty was now transferred to fiveeighth and Gregory was made fullback. Hobbins retired with an injured nose. New Zealand now showed better combination and the crowd grew very excited. A fine left-wing movement by Dufty and Jones followed and Watene dashed past Hughes from the twenty-five line and scored behind the posts. Gregory converted. Scheiner made a brilliant run but short-kicked and Green followed through and socred, Hughes converting. Before the whistle went ’both sides were penalised and Gregory kicked a goal for New Zealand. The gruelling game did the visitors good. The scorers for New Zealand were:—Tries: Meyer, two; Brisbane, one; Watene, one. Goals: Gregory, three and converted one penalty.
