OVER WORKED

CLERGY IN WAIKATO RELIEF TO BE GIVEN From Our Oxen Correspondent HAMILTON, Wednesday. Reference to many cases of clergymen in the Waikato Diocese being overworked was made at the Waikato Synod today. Mr. D. Hay (Hamilton} moved that the standing committee be urged to appoint *a relieving clergyman at the earliest possible moment. Mr. Hay said he knew of at least three parishes where the clergy had been on the verge of nervous breakdowns on account of overwork. A permanent relieving officer was needed to give these clergy an opportunity for resting. Mr. T. C. Fookes said the proposition was beyond the limits of practical politics in view of the financial position of the diocese. Archedeacon G. G. Bell said be was in constant apprehension of hearing of clergy in charge of parishes breaking down owing to overwork. There were a number of pensioner clergymen in Auckland who might be prepared to act in a relieving capacity in the Waikato diocese * for a small stipend.

The motion was carried, several members dissenting.
