NEW UNITED CABINET
REARRANGEMENT EXPECTED
Special to THE SUN WELLINGTON, Today
No announcement has been made as yet regarding the personnel of the new United Cabinet by the Prime Ministerdesignate, the Hon. G. W. Forbes, who returned to Wellington yesterday. It is thought, however, that there will be few alterations in the present personnel, although the distribution of portfolios may well be altered. Two new Ministers will have to be appointed to fill the vacancies caused by the resignations of Sir Joseph Ward and the Hon. T. M. Wilford, and popular fancy has nominated Mr. A. J. Murdoch. Chief Government Whip, and Mr. S. G. Smith, Chairman of Committees, for the positions. It is suggested that, in view of the common problems confronting rail and road transport administrations, these offices can well be carried out by one man. Mr. Forbes is expected to retain the portfolio of lands, although he may assign that of Agriculture to one of his colleagues. The combining of the Labour and Public Works Departments, in view of the present unemployment situation, is also considered a possibility. An important statement concerning the Government’s financial programme tor the year is expected to be made by the new Prime Minister following the swearing-in of the Cabinet tomorrow at 1 p.m.
The appointment of Air. Forbes to the Privy Council will probably be among tire birthday honours list to be issued next week.
