ANOTHER RECORD

BRIDSON ESTABLISHES NEW 500-METRES TIME EMPIRE GAMES CARNIVAL Swimming easily, Gordon Brioson knocked nearly 15 seconds off A. E. Baird’s 500 metres record at the Tepid Baths last evening. It was a great solo effort. THE carnival, which was organised by the Auckland Centre to raise funds to send Bridson and Aliss G. Pidgeon to the Empire Games, was poorly attended. The fields were quite large and there was some keen racing, especially in the inter-club reiay and the dual relay. Bridson made his attempt unpaced and only once got behind his scheduled time —at the ninth lap. He made it over the next lap and was eight seconds to the good with two laps to go. The world’s record for the distance is 6min 8 2-ssec. Bridson swam 51 2-ssec outside this phenomenal time. The 200 yards dual relay was a great race. Only two pairs started, R. de Loree and Marie Farquhar swimming against Bridson and Lila Coutts. Bridson and de Loree touched together at the end of the first lap. but Bridson drew ahead, giving Aliss Coutts a lead of five yards. Aliss Farquhar gained two yards in her first lap and another two in her second, going on to win by a yard and a-half. The winners cannot hold the Batty Cup. They belong to different clubs. Giving away 16sec to a woman competitor, T. Lowe won the breast-stroke handicap from scratch. Aliss G. Pidgeon swam 400 metres breast-stroke in order to establish a record time for New Zealand, there being none previously. In the water polo Waitemata A beat Mount Eden by two goals to one.
