PUKEKOHE BOROUGH COUNCIL
The Pukekohe Borough Council met on Monday evening, the Mayor. Mr. J. Routly, presiding. In his annual report the treasurer, Mr. S. M. Bish, said that the financial position of the borough was satisfactory. The waterworks account was in credit to the amount of £550. and the general account had a credit of £250. In the library account there was a credit of £BB.
The Finance Committee was instructed to report to the next meeting of the council in connection with proposed expenditure of £I,OOO on footpaths.
It was decided to seek authority from j:he Minister of Internal Affairs to charge for water by the meter system. A grant of £SO was made to the Pukekohe Band.
It was decided to have a general revaluation made of the district. When the last valuation was made, about eight years ago. the wealth of the borough was estimated at £877,706.
The opinion that local bodies are called upon to contribute too large a share toward the cost of relieving unemployment was expressed when a communication advising that the levy for the coming year had been fixed at
.'Hid in the pound, was received from the Auckland Hospital Board. Several members were of the opinion that the maintenance of the unemployed should be a charge upon the Government.
