Entries for this year’s Waikato Show, which close on May 10, give every promise of surpassing the record number of recent, years. Butter and and cheese exhibits constitute a record, while the home industries section has met with a splendid response. * # * The following officers were elected at the annual meeting Of the Matangi branch of the Farmers’ Union on Thursday evening:—President, Mr. W. Boyd secretary-treasurer, Mr. J. Ranstead; delegate to provincial conference, Mr. W. Lee Martin, M.P.; sub-provincial delegate, Mr. W. Boyd; deputy, Mr. B. Williams; committee, Messrs. Williams, Pilkington, Coventry, Bryant, W. L. Ranstead and Capey; auditor, Mr. Buckingham. * * * There will be keen competition from all parts of the Auckland Province in root crops at the Waikato Winter Show, which will be opened at Hamilton by the Governor-General on May 27. Considerable discussion arose at the meeting of the Hamilton Rugby Union this week concerning the advisability of continuing the insurance scheme with the Taupiri Union. It was eventually decided to subsidise the Taupiri scheme. During the week great improvements have been made to the grounds of the Koromatua School as the result of a working bee organised by the settlers. Eighteen workers and seven teams of horses with scoops to plough have been engaged in levelling the grounds. * * * Last months, the trustees of the Herbert Smith Fund, Hamilton, made over a dozen grants of a total value of £122 to organisations all over the Dominion. * * • The Hamilton Quota of £SOO for the Obstetrical Fund has been exceeded by £SO 4s lOd. After paying all expenses £541 3s Id has been forwarded to the Auckland Provincial Committee. • » * The appointment of Mr. Sydney Simmons, of Hamilton, as Commissioner of Boy Scouts for the South Auckland district, has been reconv mended as the result of a visit from Major F. W. Sandford, of Christchurch. Dominion Commissioner. • • * A succesful year was reported at the annual meeting of the Hamilton Division of the St. John Ambulance Brigade on Thursday night. The balance sheet disclosed a healthy state of affairs. Mr. J. H. Furness, of Rotowaro, was elected president of the Waikato subprovincial district of the Farmers’ Union at the annual meeting yesterday. Other officers were:—Vice-presi-dent, Mr. H. A. Watkins; treasurer, Mr. W. H. Worster; auditor, Mr. W. Stopford; provincial conference delegates, Messrs. A. Ramsey and C. J. Phair; committee, Messrs. Ramsey, J. McKay and T. J. Roach. The balance sheet showed a working profit for the year of £B3 4s sd.
