MAORI TOBACCO GROWERS DISAPPOINTED PRICES FOR PRODUCT Front Our Own Correspondent ROTORUA, Friday. Following a letter which appeared in an Auckland paper alleging tiiat the Maori growers of tobacco in the Kotorua district had been misled by statements of Mr. C. Lowe, Uovernlnent tobacco expert, regarding prices likely to be obtained for their product, a meeting ol the Arawa Tobacco Urowers was held last evening. After Mr. Lowe had made an explanation, a resolution was passed expressing the. opinion that the published statements were true in every particular. Those present also said they did not wish to have anything to do with Mr. Lowe in any way, and would only recognise Mr. Everett as their instructor. Subsequently Mr. N. A. Keane, secretary of the association, told a Sun man that the Maoris had not been lairly treated by Mr. Lowe. Certainly last year's crop had been disposed o'f at fair prices, but nothing near Mr Lowes estimates had been realised. The Maoris had erected barns and K)lns at a cost of £630 and these still had to be paid for. There were .24 growers last year, but only nine were continuing to operate.
