CIVIC
PICTURES, MUSIC AND DANCING Another large and enthusiastic audience enjoyed the splendidly varied programme in the magnificent Civic Theatre all day Saturday. The musical side of the programme is a special treat. Under Ted Henkel’s expert hand, the Civic’s big symphony orchestra plays the overture and other selections on the moving barge, also gay music from the famous stage band. On the dancing side there are spectacular dances by the remarkable Continental trio, Ramon, Madeline, and Pedro, colourful scenes and snappy dancing by the Civic’s corps de ballet. Finally, one enjoys two or three particularly fine organ solos by Fred Scholl, which are a fitting prelude to the big talkie comedy, “Three Live Ghosts.’’ The majority of films, however good, are forgotten almost as soon as one leaves the theatre, but “Three Live Ghosts,’’ which is having an extended season at the Civic Theatre, is not like that. It causes spontaneous laughter throughout, and it lives in the memory after as a source of many internal chuckles. That there are who have gone to see this picture two and even three times is sufficient recommendation for it. Beryl Mercer, Tempe Piggott. Daisy Belmore and Frank Terry, who are featured in “Medals,” Gary Cooper’s first starring picture for Paramount, all made their stage debut in the Drury Lane Theatre, London. “Medals,” w hich was adapted from the play “The Old Lady Shows Her Medals.” by Sir James M. Barrie, is now being edited
