Telegraph Workers’ Telephone Tapped
RACE DAY INCIDENT
INQUIRY BY INSPECTORS
Tapping the telephone by laying a wire under a carpet, two inspectors of the Post and Telegraph Department took note of all conversation on betting or “tips” by members of the stall of the Auckland Telegraph Office during the Takapuna Jockey Club’s meetings on Saturday and Monday. As a result, more than 40 members of the telegraph staff have been questioned and those who used the telephone were confronted with the notes of their conversations. In some cases the employees sought legal advice. It is a rule of the Post and Telegraph Department that any officer refusing to supply information to a superior may be suspended. Betting conversations on the tele* graph phones by officers on duty aiV strictly forbidden.
