SOCIETY OF MUSICIANS

DR. S. K. PHILLIPS ELECTED PRESIDENT

ANNUAL MEETING

If the society could attract the support of all musicians, a great deal could be done, particularly in the direction of helping along young teachers,” said Dr. S. K. Phillips, in moving the adoption of the report and balance sheet at the annual meeting of the Auckland Society of Musicians last evening.

The president appealed to those music teachers now well established to do what they could to help the young teachers. The report showed a membership of 113 professional members and 105 associate members. During the season 23 new members were enrolled. The president also referred to the business transacted at the sixth annual Conference of the New Zealand Society of Professional Teachers of Music held at Wellington in May last. Arising out of the recommendation of the conference it was decided to alter the name of the society to that of the New Zealand Society of Professional Teachers of Music, Auckland Division (.Incorporated). The president explained that this was felt desirable in order to bring all the societies in New Zealand under one name so that the musicians of New Zealand could speak with one voice on matters affecting them. The election of officers resulted as follows: —President, Dr. S. K. Phillips; vice-presidents, Mr. Barry Coney and Mr. John Tait; council. Misses M. Hooker, A. Necker, A. Hansard, G. Searell, M. Shutes, D. Judson and Mr. A. O. Jensen; honorary secretary and treasurer, Mrs. A. Boult. A vote of thanks was accorded past officers and all those who had helped to entertain at the various functions held throughout the year. On the motion of Mr. Barry Coney, it was decided to donate the sum of £l7 3s from the general fund to the scholarship fund to bring that total up to £BO.
