PAPAKURA BEATEN IN B GRADE CLEVEDON SPRINGS SURPISE Although defeated by nine matches to four, in the third round of the outer suburban tennis inter-club competitions on Saturday, the Mangere East Club put up a stubborn tdefence against the Papatoetoe A grade team. All of the men’s matches went to three sets. In the singles, 41 Papatoetoe won all except ono, while in the doubles, Mangere East retaliated and won all the matches. The Papatoetoe women outclassed their opponents, and did not lose a match.
With a depleted team owing to injuries and illness, the East Tamaki representatives were an easy prey for the Valley team. The match was played at Valley. The only visitors to gain the verdict were the first and second women, who won their singles and also their doubles. The balance of the matches were easilv accounted for by Valley. Papakura defeated Clevedon by nine matches to four. The final result is a good indication of the trend of play The majority of the matches were very evenly contested, 50 per cent, going to the third set. PAPAKU RA’S FIRST DEFEAT With the B grade championship to its credit for the past two years, an unbeaten record, and two rounds of the present season’s competitions to its credit, the Papakura B grade team met its Waterloo at the hands of Clevedon, in the third round, played on Saturdaj*. The match was played on the winner’s courts. Papakura won all of the singles matches, except the first men’s. Miss J. McCullough’s performance in defeating Miss Arbuckle, who in previous seasons played A grade, was very creditable. With a continuance of her present form, she will be included in the A grade at an early date. The Clevedon women all upheld the honour of their club, winning all their matches. The final score was B—6.
The Papatoetoe v. Mangere East B grade game was evenly contested. The former, which won by eight matches to six, has to thank the women members of the team, who won all their matches.
Valley had no difficulty in accounting for East Tamaki. Playing at East Tamaki, the home team won only two matches out of 14.
In the Howick v. Manurewa match, played at Pakuranga. a number of the matches had to be curtailed on account of the failing light, as only two courts were available for play. The home team was successful by 8 matches to 6.
