CAFFERY'S SENTENCE

LEAVE TO APPEAL SOUGHT APPLICATION FILED An application, for leave to appeal against the sentence of 12 years’ hard labour imposed on George Cattery for manslaughter has been filed, in the Supreme Court by his counsel at the trial, Mr. J. F. W. Dickson. Cattery received this sentence for the slaying of Thomas Leavy who was fatally stabbed in a house in Nelson Stre't on the evening of August 2. The depositions will be read by the Court of Appeal, which will decide whether leave to appeal should be granted. If permission is granted the court will consider the length of the sentence.
