RYAN, BRIDSON AND GRIFFITHS THIS EVENING’S RACE The triangular swimming event this evening in the Tepid Baths between NoeT Ryan and Owen Griffiths, the New South Wales visitors, and Gordon Bridson, of Grammar Club, New* Zealand middle-distance champion, is expected to go down as one of the biggest races in the history of the Auckland Swimming Centre. Over 440yds, Ryan, Bridson and Griffiths are to be engaged in what has every indication of being a strenuous race. Ryan, the outstanding Australian swimmer of the day despite his youth, has raced 440yds in 5.17, but this time was bettered by Bridson in an individual swim only last week, when he made a New Zealand record of 5.16 3-5. Griffiths is a line quartermile swimmer. The centre has an attractive programme for this evening and it also has a line array of events for its second carnival tomorrow evening, at which the Australians will compete with Auckland’s best over more distances. The 100yds scratch event this evening will be even. Ryan and Griffiths will oppose J. P. Farrell (Varsity), the Auckland champion, D. P. Lindsay and J. Enwright (Waitemata), R. Porteous (Mount Eden), and A. W. Raper (Ponsonby). The supporting events include a dual relay, a girls’ sprint in which Miss Peggy Robertson will race, and a water polo game.
