MAYOR DISQUALIFIED

PAYMENTS BY COUNCIL TO HIS FIRM ORDERED BEFORE ELECTIONS Press Association HASTINGS, Today. Owing to some material for the Borough Council, purchased from Roachs, Ltd., four months before the last mayoral election and which had to be imported, having just arrived, payment therefore must be made during the tenure of the present Mayor, Mr. George F. Roach, who, being a member of the firm, asked the Comp-troller-General to define his position. In view of the payments having to be made during Mr. Roach’s mayoralty, the deiiartment ruled that he was disqualified from office. An emergency meeting of the council was held this morning and the council was unanimously of the opinion that the technical infringement had been harshly interpreted, and reaffirmed its confidence in him as Mayor, expressing the hope that he would not be opposed at the ensuing election.
