LIBRARY LEAGUE'S WORK!
SHOP WINDOW DISPLAY OLD BOOKS WANTED A display of work by the Mayoress's War Memorial Library League in one of the new of the Civic Theatre block is attracting considerable attention and has served to bring before the public the excellent work being done by this bod j*. An opportunity of helping the league’s funds will be given on Saturday afternoon next, when a garden party will be held in Mrs. Alf. Kidd’s home at 28 Gillies Avenue, Epsom. Goods and fancy work will be on sale at the numerous stalls. The league, which is under the patronage of the Governor-General and the Lady Alice Fergusson, is concerned principally with distributing gifts and of toys and botfks to soldiers’ settlements. However, scrap books are made for children in orphanages and country hospitals, and for those in the bush country. Books and magazines are also sent to Public Works camps, to philanthropic institutes and to hospitals. A number of bins have been placed by the league at points around the city, and here huge numbers of back numbers of magazines and of old books are placed regularly by sympathisers. The league re-covers and rebinds these volumes before distributing them. Some excellent examples of handiwork in this way are on display in the shop, along with photographs showing piles of parcels ready to be sent away. Books in all stages of renovation are seen; also toys made very cleverly from old cigar boxes. Scrap books of most artistic design are also on display. The league invites contributions of books, suggesting that housewives engaged in spring cleaning should put volumes aside, when they will be collected by the league.
