BIG FAMILY GROUP

BIRTHDAY OF MRS. HENRY HAYWARD LONG, INTERESTING LIFE Thirty-six members of the family of Mrs. Henry Hayward gathered at her home,' “The Cliffs,” Virkenhead, on Sunday, when her 85ta birthday was celebrated. Mrs. Hayward, whose faculties are as alert as those of many a younger woman, and whose life has been filled with a wealth of interesting experiences, notably in the theatrical world, has eight children, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren. One of her sons, Mr. Henry Hayward, is one of New Zealand’s foremost motion picture exhibitors, and is at the head of Fuller-Hayward Theatres, the head office of which is in Auckland. For her a/a, Mrs. Hayward is unusually active. She takes a great interest in botany, and for the greater part of the day can be found at work in her garden. She is a regular visitor to the theatre. Mrs. Hayward has a clear recollection of events of well over half a century ago, and has kept herself well-informed with the stage, with which she was connected in her younger days. Her husband, who died nearly 40 years ago, was a well-known entrepreneur and an acquaintance of Charles Dickens and Jenny Lind. Mrs. Hayward has in her possession a scrap book of letters from celebrities of the day, and a programme of “Elijah,” played in Birmingham, when the late Mr. Hayward played in an orchestra conducted by Mendelssohn.
