RICCARTON TOPICS

NOTES FROM THE TRACKS HORSES AND THEIR RIDERS (Special to THE SUN) CHRISTCHURCI-I, Monday. The plough track was open at Riccarton today, but there was no work of an outstanding nature. Goblin Market, who is a fancied candidate for the Stewards’ Handicap, was given a strong working gallop over seven furlongs. The Absurd gelding looks in excellent fettle and probably will be ridden by T. Green in the Stewards. Honour and Jaleux worked at a strong pace over a mile, and Pride also was given a strong gallop and moved very freely. She will be allowed to drop out of the Cup today in favour of her stable mate, Jaleux, who will be ridden by R. Henshaw. Havering, who was given easy work, looks a picture of health and is sure to run well in his engagements at the carnival. Red Heckle was on the track, but was not asked to do much. In all ability he will be ridden by C. Emerson in the Stewards’ Handicap. Derby Candidate Meprisant looks none the worse for his race in the Akaroa Handicap on Saturday, and he strode out freely while doing light exercise on the plough. B. H. Morris rides him in the Derby. In the Shade did easy work, sprinting home the last three furlongs in 40 1-5. H. Goldfinch rides him in the Cup. The Welcome Stakes candidate Spoon did easy work. She is to be ridden by B. H. Morris in Saturday’s classic. Coveny rides Subdivision in the Stewards’ and C. Eastwood will have the mount on Amor in the Cup. B. H. Morris rides Historic. Merry Mint and Hunting Cry, members of J. Cameron’s team, galloped six furlongs at a strong bat. Both horses look well. Goshawk was also given steady work. The Magpie gelding looks a trifle big in condition, but a race should improve him vastly. F. Tilley’s team all got through serviceable work. H. Wiggins has been engaged for Cashier in the Cup, and It,. Coveny rides Black Mint. Ready for Business Taurua, a full brother to Te Monanui, was given steady work on the plough, and he looks in great fettle. Eaglet will not fulfil her engagement in the Stewards. There is nothing amis with the filly, however. J. Barry will be on Hoylake in the Cup, and L. G. Morris rides Concentrate. Toomy Ara (E. Shaw) and After Ten (Li. Evans) gave a good display over a round of hurdles. Prodice was not asked to go fast, but she hit out very freely on the plough and appeared anxious to increase the pace. Should Royal Saxon contest the Stewards he will be ridden by B. Brodie. C. Eastwood probably will have the mount on Caterpillar in the Stewards, and Leader, if started, will be ridden by W. Pascoe. L. J. Ellis has been engaged for prodice, and T. Green will ride Seatown. Paganelli, who looks in rare condition after his recent racing, was restricted to easy work. H. Goldfinch will ride him in the sprint.
