AORANGI MET BY VARIETY OF CRAFT
A CURIOUS assortment of craft greeted the Aorangi as the liner dropped anchor in the stream yesterday afternoon. Overhead two airplanes soared and banked as they welcomed Squadron-Leader Kingsford Smith. Two oarsmen in single sculls impertinently bobbed about on the water, looking less than corks against the sides of the huge Aorangi. Two yachts glided by like birds on the wing—the earliest out this season. A fussy speed-boat cut the water like a knife as it circled in front of its lines of foam. Three launches carrying officials and sightseers looked laborious by comparison. Ferry steamers crossing to and from Devonport added to the variety of water-craft. A small coastal steamer, with her nose pointing to the gulf, gave a dull whistle by way of greeting.
