N.Z. CUP TRIAL

Gold Jacket and Padlock Fight it Out SEVERAL PACERS FALL - (Special to THE SUX) WELLINGTON, Saturday. The accident which occurred two and a-half furlongs from the post in the Cup Trial today probably had no effect on the ultimate result, and Gold Jacket, coming from the back with a splendid finishing effort beat Padlock, who had an excellent run on the rails, by half a length. The much-discussed event, which was the king pin heat of the day, caused spirited speculation, and seven of the runners had very little separating them on tho machine. Kohara £606 was a three-pound better choice than Maiwhariti, while Imprint £5Bl was carrying only six pounds more than Padlock, with Linkman, Great Bingen and Gold Jacket almost on terms in the market. How They Ran Jean McElwyn soon hit the front and led from Kohara, Western King, Linkman, Maiwhariti and Padlock who had made up his handicap fast. Passing the stand Western King was showing the way to Maiwhariti, Jean McElwyn, Kohara and Linkman, with padlock on the outside of Imprint and Gold Jacket. Racing into the back Western King was leading Maiwhariti, Jean McElwyn, Padlock and Imprint, but two and a-half furlongs from home Jean McElwyn fell and brought down Kohara, while Maiwhariti and Western King were pulled up. Luckily Padlock raced clear and was followed into the straight by Linkman, Gold Jacket and Great Bingen. Toward the close Gold Jacket finished full of running and easily beat Padlock by half a length. Great Bingen would probably have finished second but for tangling near the post. He was one and a-half lengths away third followed by Linkman, Peter Bingen and Imprint. Gold Jacket outclassed the field at the finish and displayed rare staying powers. He was driven with great judgment by Andy Bryce, who will be behind the Gold Bell gelding in the New Zealand Cup.
