WIDENING NEW ROAD
HOLIDAY PREPARATIONS OPOTIKI-GISBORNE ROUTE From Our Oxen Correspondent OPOTIKI, Today. Although the new Matawai road between Opotiki and Gisborne is not yet officially opened lor traffic, it is the intention of the Public Works Department to open the road for a fortnight at Christmas during the big holiday rush, thus relieving congestion on the present dangerous xUotu route. It is not expected that the work of widening the new road will enable the road to be permanently opened until the following summer. By that time the country where the road cuts through will ’be more consolidated. Owing to the easy grades on the new loute the 'Waioeka Road will undoubtedly become the main route between Gisborne and the Bay of Plenty when ready for motor traffic.
