SHORT OF COAL
TREGONELL’S SCANTY SUPPLY VOYAGE OF ILL-LUCK Short of coal, with less than a day's supply on board, was the experience of the Hain Line's steamer Tregonell now at the King's Wharf discharging phosphates from Nauru Island. Ever since she has been on the New Zealand coast she has been followed by misfortune. It will be recalled that the Tregonell had to put into Auckland last month with a dying man on board. Since then she has met with continuous bad weather. The vessel originally arrived at Auckland on August 2$ from Ocean Island, and, after discharging phosphates here, proceeded to Westport for bunkers before returning to Ocean Island and Nauru Islaud for further loading. She cleared the coal port on September 14, but three days later had to race to Auckland with the second engineer who had attempted suicide. However, before the vessel reached Auckland, the engineer died. The Tregonell left Auckland again on September 18, but ever since leaving has met with continuous bad weather which delayed her loading at the Islands as well as keeping her from steaming at her usual speed. With these delays and with bad coal, the vessel reached Auckland with less than a day's supply on board.
