DARGAVILLE FUNCTION
ANNUAL CATHOLIC BAZAAR “POPULAR GIRL" CONTEST Combining a juvenile “popular girl” contest with the activities of the annual Catholic bazaar, which was held in the Theatre Royal, Dargaville, on Saturday, a most successful function resulted in the sum of more than £4OO being realised. Subsequent to the function the Rev. Father Van Westeinde expressed his pleasure at the success attained, and thanked all those who had assisted. The winner of the contest was Miss Marie Anderson, of Dargaville, with 10,976 votes. Miss Ivy Dooley was next with 8,926, and Miss Nancy Langton, the only other contestant, received 8,370 votes. The various stalls, which were well arranged and prettily decorated, were capably managed by the following: Hibernian stall. Mesdames A. J. Martin and S. Dean; plain goods, Mesdames E. Martindale. Seymour, J. Totich and Miss T. Brown; refreshments, Miss L. Marchbanks, assisted by Mesdames W. Martin, Condon, R. Hannan, Brunton, T. Phelan, J. Fannon and the Misses M. and K. Hackett; country stall, Mesdames R. and J. Langton, Reidy and Miss McDermott; art, Mesdames Anderson, T. E. Jones, D. Williams and the Misses A. S tana way and Reardon; Children of Mary, the Misses A. Carrington, E. Jones, N. Stanaway and Dahl berg. The sideshows were under the charge of Messrs. E. Martindale, l r - Lunny and M. Munro. On the stage the Rev. Father Westeinde and the Rev. Father Bruning and Mr. J. P* Stanaway superintended the drawing of the art unions and counting of votes in regard to the “popular girl” contest. Mr. Desmond Stanaway made a successful clearance of remaining articles by auctioneering them prior to closing.
