Culvert Blown Up As a Protest
TERRIFIC EXPLOSION DALMATIAN FINED £5 (From Our Own Correspondent) HAMILTON, Today. The terrific explosion which startled Tauwhare residents on the evening of August 8 had its sequel in the Magistrate’s Court today, when a Dalmatian, Ar.tonion Sorich, was charged with discharging explosives at Eureka on the Tamahere-Morrinsviile Road. In a statement to the police defendant said he used the explosive to blow up a culvert recently built near his property by the Tamahere Road Board. As a result of the board's operations, 70 acres of his farm had been flooded to an average depth of three feet. He used the explosive with the intention of protesting at the board’s action, rather than destroying the culvert. Mr. Wyveru Wilson, S.M., said the defendant should understand it was unwise to take the law in his own hands in this country.
Defendant was convicted and fined £ 5.
