WOMEN’S CHAMPIONSHIP AUCKLAND LOSES AGAIN Press Association GISBORNE, Tuesday. The fifth day’s play in the New Zealand women’s hockey championship tourney took place today, and was marred by bad weather. The games started in sunshine, but torrential rain fell within 10 minutes of the conclusion of the first series of matithes. Afterwards it cleared somewhat, but fairly heavy showers fell at intervals. Both Auckland teams were defeated. Details uf the scores are:— Section A.—Southland, 7, v. Bush, 1; Ruahine, 4, v. South Canterbury, U; Rotorua, 2, v. Auckland A, 1. Section B.—Wellington, 2, v. Wairarapa, 1; Canterbury, 3, v. Eastern, 2; Hawke’s Bay, 7, v. Auckland B, 1. Weak shooting in front of the goal mouth cost Auckland the game against Rotorua. It was a willing if not an exciting encounter. The Auckland forwards repeatedly entered the circle, but their shooting was weak. Rotorua did not play as well as usual. For Rotorua, Misses Garmonsway and Rogers scored, while Miss Lowe scored for Auckland. The game between Hawke’s Bay and Auckland B was much more even than the scores indicate. The losers- did a good share of attacking, but were lacking finish. For Hawke’s Bay, .Miss Cook scored four goals, and Miss Mortensen three. Miss Carlaw scored for Auckland. The outstanding players for Hawke’s Bay were the scorers and Misses Hairenia and Gemmell. For Auckland, Misses J. Carlaw, B. Colman, A. Black, and B. and J. Dodds were prominent. The positions of the teams now are as follows: Section A. —Ruahine, 4 games, 4 wins; Southland, 4,4; Poverty Bay A, 4,3; Rotorua, 4,3; Bush, 5,1; South Canterbury, 4,0; Auckland, 5, U. Section B.—Canterbury, 5 games, 5 wins; Wellington, 4,4; Wairarapa, 4, 2; Eastern, 4,1: Hawke’s Bay, 4. 2; Auckland B, 5,1; Poverty Bay 4, U. Tomorrow Bush has a bye in A section, and Canterbury has u. bye in B section. On Friday the winner of A section will play the winner of B section, and a Pakeha v. Maori match will also take place. The tournament will conclude on Saturday, when the North Island will Play the South Island.
