MALTA AND VATICAN

POPE PIUS DEFENDS HIS ATTITUDE (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) ROME, Friday. Pope Pius, in an address to 600 pilgrims from Malta, defended his attitude toward the Prime Minister of Malta, Lord Strickland. The Pope said no credence should be placed on those calling themselves good Catholics who did not obey the bishops, and did not follow the thoughts of the Pope. Official persons in Malta welcome the Pope’s moderate terms, which are in strong contrast to Cardinal Gasparri’s earlier and more emphatic utterance^ It is now clear that the Ministers have not been excommunicated, and a deplorable incident can be regarded as closed.
