ARTIST’S FORTUNE. —The late Mr. William McLeod. artist, formerly managing director of the ‘Sydney Bulletin,” who died in June, left an estate valued at £231,063. WOOL TRADE DEADLOCK. A deadlock has been reached in the dispute in the British wool and textile trade. The employers have rejected the unions' proposal for arbitration.— A. and N.Z.-P.A. ESCAPES FROM FIRE. An outbreak of fire early yesterday morning destroyed the largest guest house at a *paside resort in the Gippsland lakes district. Victoria, conducted by Mr. C. Broome. Several of the guests made their escape through windows or by lowering themselves with the aid of sheets from the upper floor. Four men were slightly burned. SPEEDING Ul* MAILS.—The Irish I'ree State Post office Department has functioned the experiment of transferring the mails from the North German Lloyd liner Karlsruhe when she arrives on Monday at Galway to on ;ii rplane. PLAYS OF G.B.S. —A dramatic festival has begun at the West Country town of Malvern. Mr. G. Bernard Shaw’s play. “The Apple Cart.” was Presented for the first time in public in England. The piece was received 'vith enthusiasm. People from many Pnrta of the world are visiting the festival, which is to last a fortnight a nd is to he devoted exclusively to the production of Mr. Shaw’s plays.— British Official Wireless.
