“RINGERS-IN” SENTENCED

YEAR’S HARD LABOUR FOR TWO MEN TROTS SENSATION SEQUEL Press Association CHRISTCHURCH, Today. In the Supreme Court, Samuel Bates and Leslie Holland, for “ringing in” the trotter Bruce as Imperial Thorpe, were sentenced to one year s hard labour by Mr. Justice Adams. The Crown Prosecutor said the prisoners had committed an impudent swindle. His Honour said the men had worked -with the same dishonest minds to commit fraud, in which there was a possibility of considerable profit to themselves. Their hopes were disappointed; but that did not affect the nature and quality of their act. The sentence must b® substantial.
