TRUCK DRIVER FINED
NO LIGHTS ON VEHICLE SEQUEL TO FATALITY (From Our Oxen Correspondent) PUKEKOHE, Wednesday. On a charge of driving an unlighted motor-lorry at Patumahoe, George Philip Fletcher was fined £2 at the Pukekohe Police Court today. This •was the sequel to the finding of the dead body of a Maori on the roadside. Fletcher was also charged with failing to report an accident to the nearest police station. The magistrate, Mr. F. H. Levien, remarked that there was no question of doubt regarding the lights. The second offence was connected with the recent charge of negligent driving preferred against Fletcher, which was thrown out by the grand jury. He held that the charge of failing to report could not proceed. Permission was granted to withdraw the second prosecution. A plea of guilty was entered to the charge of driving without lights. It was pointed out by the defence that Fletcher had not gone out wilfully without lights on his vehicle. They were burning earlier in the evening, and owing to some defect had failed. Defendant was also ordered to pay 10s costs.
