MAN AND WOMEN CHARGED IN CHRISTCHURCH £2OO WORTH OF GOODS Press Association CHRISTCHURCH. Today. An unusual point was raised in tho Magistrate’s Court this morning when a man and a woman were jointly charged with the theft of trunks, suitcases and clothes, valued at £2OO. the property of an Australian whose name was the same as that of the female accused, who said that he was her husband. The chief detective, in asking for a remand, said that the man and the woman stole the goods in Sydney and ran away to New Zealand. Counsel asked for temporary suppression of their names, as the pair had intended to settle down in New Zealand. He also asked for bail. "Have I the power to grant bail Sn an extradition case such as this?"* asked tlie magistrate. The chief detective opposed bail. “We have no proof that this woman is the complainant’s wife,* ’lie said. The Magistrate: I don’t like bail in these extradition cases. The names were suppressed in the meantime and accused were remanded till August 29.
