FIERCE, FATAL BATTLE

SOCIALISTS AND FASCISTS CLASH IN AUSTRIA MACHINE-GUNS USED (Australian and N.Z. Press Association) VIENNA, Monday. A fierce encounter between Fascists and Socialists at Marein resulted in several of the combatants being killed. From 30 to 40 others were wounded. The Socialists had obtained a permit to hold a demonstration. A body of Fascists known as the Kelmwehr broke a promise that they would confine their counter-demonstration to a neighbouring village and poured into Marein in order to break up the Socialist meeting. The Fascists were stoned by the Socialists. They retaliated by using rifles and machine-guns.
