MIGRANTS DEFENDED

ABOVE THE AVERAGE, SAYS BENDIGO’S CAPTAIN MR. HUGHES FOR N.Z. SYDNEY, Monday. The steamer Bendigo arrived at Sydney today from England. Captain Wyatt expressed the opinion that the migrants on board were above the average. This was an answer to the charges made by Mr. Collingwood Hughes, a former member of the British House of Commons, whose criticisms of the migrants created a stir when the vessel was at Fremantle. It is understood that Mr. Hughes intends to proceed to New Zealand. He is suffering from insomnia. He refused today to make a statement about the recent happenings on the steamer.
