FIRE-BRIGADE FOR BIRKENHEAD

CARNIVAL TO RAISE FUNDS The proposal to hold a Queen Carnival to raise funds for a fire brigade for Birkenhead was advanced another stage last evening, at a meeting of representatives of various organisations held in the Council Chambers, Birkenhead. The Mayor. Mr. J. P. McPhail. presided. The Business Association, combined friendly societies and Labour Party each decided to enter a candidate for the carnival, and members from Beach Haven and Island Bay agreed to support a Birkdale queen. The carnival will open on Saturday, August 31. which will be “Fire Brigade Saturday,” and a house to house canvass will be made, the proceeds to be fooled between the various queens. It was decided that the carnival finish on October 31. It was agreed that the controlling body consist of the executive of the Ratepayers’ Association, two representatives of the council and two representatives from each of the queen committees.
