Prisoner Recaptured After a Long Chase

ARRESTED IN BED PURSUIT OVER MUDDY ROADS After enjoying a week of liberty, William Marryatt Ingram was arrested at 2 o’clock this morning in a gumdigger’s hut at Te Hana, near Wellsford. He was lying asleep in bed and expressed great surprise when Constable D. Ryan, of Wellsford, woke him. Ingram jumped from the Limited as she was pulling into the Auckland railway station last Saturday morning, eluded the escorting constable and escaped among the crowd which was waiting on the platform. For the past week Ingram has been tramping round the North and evidently thought that he had thrown the police off the scent. However, he was recognised In the Tauhoa district on Thursday. Constable Ryan was informed and tracked Ingram all day yesterday, sometimes travelling by train and at other times on horseback over muddy roads. The chase led from Tauhoa to Hoteo, Kaipara Flats and back again to Te Hana. The country roads were very bad, but this did not prevent Ingram from travelling quickly, as he is a good walker. Last night Ingram was given a bed by a sympathetic gumdigger who did not know that the man who asked for a shakedown was wanted by the police. Ingram told the constable that after leaving the Auckland railway station he had been given a lift In a motor-car as far as Helensville. From there he walked, always travelling North. He had not done any work. At first Ingram denied his identity, but as the constable had a full description of the wanted man he finally admitted it. Ingram will be brought into Auckland by the Whangarei Express this evening and will appear at the Magistrate’s Court on Monday morning. When he eluded his escort Ingram was being brought from Taihape to Auckland to face a charge of false pretences.
