BROKE INTO SHOP

MAN FOR SENTENCE CONFESSED TO POLICE Admitting to the police that he had broken into a shop at Newmarket recently, Arthur Lowe led Detective-Sergeant Doyle and Act-ing-Detective Belton to where he had hidden what part of his loot he still had. This morning at the Police Court Lowe, aged 33, was charged with breaking and entering the shop of Gertrude Angel at 127 Broadway, Newmarket, on July 23, and stealing goods and money to a total value of £ls 4s 2d. According to Gertrude Angel, the shop had been entered through a window which had been broken, at the rear of the premises. Witness had gone out for the evening and. on her return about 10.45, found the cash box taken from its usual hiding place in the oven and left open on the counter. There was only a small quantity of silver left of the £ls that had been in it. Cigarettes and tobacco were also missing. “I know accused, but I have not seen him for about three years,” added the witness. “He has a woman friend who visits my premises and knows where I hide my money.” Detective-Sergeant Doyle produced a statement made by Lowe and admitting that be had broken into the shop. The statement referred to the fact that accused was a returned soldier and out of work. The detective-sergeant assured the court that everything possible had been done by accused to help the police. He had directed witness to an outhouse where, concealed in a box, the tobacco had been found. On the rafters above the door £4 had been found, while accused had handed over. £2 13b 4d.

There was no request for bail by Lowe, who was not represented by counsel.
